At the annual meeting on July 14, the HOA showed its appreciation for the many accomplishments of the outgoing directors: Ray Bowyer, Pat Connelly, Jack Foster, Steve Moranos, John Seferian and Jean Mosshart. Gift certificates to the Sconti at Disharoon were presented to the outgoing members of the board. Big Canoe artist, Phyllis Deane, was commissioned to render a print of Jean's home in appreciation for her outstanding leadership as resident.

We also welcomed the new directors to the board: Tom Almy, Kay Born, Carl Deane, Sue Hauseman, Ron James and Dick Scharf. Those remaining on the board include: George Thurman, Ben Collins, Tom Alexander, Carolyn Littell and Laura Morris.

To learn about the directors' activities and responsibilities, go to http://www.bigcanoehoa.org/ and click on 2007-2008 Officers and Directors . One of our goals this year is to increase resident participation on the committees. With your input and participation, our community will be more widely represented.

The highlight of the annual meeting was the presentation of the Outstanding Service Award. John Cutler was awarded a check for $500 and a framed certificate for his leadership and generous contribution of time and energy to our community. John's name will be engraved on a brass plate and added to the plaque that hangs in the Canoe Lodge. The award is co-sponsored by the HOA and POA. Both contribute financially, and an HOA and POA board member make the selection from nominations they receive from the community.

Some upcoming activities include:

  • AARP Defensive Driving, Aug. 25
  • American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid course, Sept. 8 and 15
  • Dr. Monica Yadav will discuss heart disease prevention, Sept. 19

Details will be in the Post Office, online, in Smoke Signals and on Channel 12.

The HOA appreciates the continuing support of Big Canoe Realty, the POA and Chapel. One of the favorite events of the year is the Symphony on the Green. It is an event that the whole community looks forward to each spring. It is co-sponsored by Big Canoe Realty and the HOA. Big Canoe Realty contributes 50 percent towards the cost of the event and offers wine and beer at no charge from its tent on the hill.

We also need the assistance of many others, especially the POA maintenance personnel who put up and take down whatever is necessary for an outdoor event, and the fire and public safety personnel who, with BCERT, manage traffic and parking. Many events would not be possible without the space and audio-visual equipment at the Chapel and Broyles Center. We thank you all.

Currently, the HOA and POA are preparing for the 2008 Census. The survey is one of our most important tools for strategic planning so it is important for all property owners to complete the survey. The survey will be sent out in January.

The HOA board looks forward to serving you during the next year.
