At my invitation, POA Board President Bob Crouch came to the May HOA Board meeting. He talked briefly about the historical relationship of the HOA and POA, how the relationship has evolved into one in which we try to identify and solve problems together. Crouch responded to questions reminding us that policy is established by the POA Board, and operational questions are best answered by the people who implement that policy -- General Manager Roger Klask and the POA staff. Other issues addressed were the General Manager search effort and the Clubhouse opening. All property owners are encouraged to call the POA office or set up an appointment to ask questions, offer opinions or make suggestions.

The HOA and POA have very different missions and responsibilities. While we do not agree on everything, we do agree that we must always strive to do the right thing for residents and property owners in Big Canoe.

A ground-breaking charter for the Community Relations Committee was adopted by both the HOA and POA at their May board meetings. Six members of the committee will be from the HOA; six from the POA. The POA Community Relations Committee has long-standing relationships and political expertise that will enhance the efforts of the HOA in its role as advocate for the homeowner. Bill Murphy has been approved by the POA to chair the committee; Carl Deane by the HOA to serve as vice chairman.

At the May BOD meeting, Director Dawson County Community Emergency Response Team Richard Sims demonstrated Swift Reach 911, an emergency notification system that includes Dawson County residents within Big Canoe. Within minutes, the system can make thousands of calls to distribute vital information, such as severe weather, fire, missing persons, water emergencies, road closures, or evacuation orders. Go to http://www.dawsoncounty.org/. Click on Swift Reach 911 to add, remove, or change your primary and secondary phone numbers. If there is no answer at your primary number, the message will automatically be sent to the secondary number.

A political forum was scheduled to be sponsored by the HOA at the Chapel on June 12. If you didn't have a chance to attend the forum, learn more about candidates for contested seats in Pickens and Dawson counties through articles in Smoke Signals Online. We anticipate a great turnout for the General Primary Election on July 15. Consider advance or absentee voting if you are unable to vote in person on July 15.
