An increased tempo accompanies the arrival of spring in Big Canoe.  Homeowners return from where they have overwintered to meet friends and neighbors at the Fitness Center, on the trails and tennis courts, or boating on the lake. What fun it is to watch the kids playing soccer or fishing from the bank of Lake Pettit.

All of us look forward to the many activities that bring us together again-the Symphony on the Green, June 1; fireworks, July 4; and the HOA Annual Meeting, July 12. The DeKalb Symphony is co-sponsored by the HOA and the developer.

During the day on July 4, a wide variety of family activities sponsored by the HOA will take place at the Play Field and Wildcat Pool. After sundown, the POA will launch a spectacular fireworks display. If you think "spectacular" is an exaggeration, consider the shadows of the mountains in the background and the reflections off the lake.

Mark your calendar for the HOA Annual Meeting on at 10:30 a.m. July 12 at the Chapel. The meeting will be followed by the very popular Varsity lunch on the Play Field.  Reservations will be required this year so watch for announcements.

he HOA Board wants to grow its membership this year from the current 1,500 residents. See the ad in Smoke Signals to appreciate the many programs and services that are provided by the HOA. Increased membership will enable us to offer more benefits and special events. Also, the more representative our membership is of our community, the stronger our voice of advocacy.

Be sure to vote for four of the seven strong nominees to represent you on the HOA Board. Read more about them (click on their photos.)

The Clubhouse at Lake Sconti is scheduled to open in June, on time and on budget.  I urge everyone to participate in the activities planned around the grand opening of our clubhouse. Food and Beverage Director Michael Pantall and Amenities Director Jim Story are anxious to hear from us so that they can learn what our community wants and needs. With your input and participation, the Clubhouse can be all that we want it to be. No doubt, it will soon become the favorite place to meet and entertain.

The POA also needs feedback on the proposed Capital Reserve Fund. If you have questions or suggestions, I urge you to attend the informational meetings that will take place during the current 30-day period for community input, or speak directly to your POA directors.

The Primary Elections will be on July 15 so be sure to register to vote.  Voters will have the opportunity to meet Pickens and Dawson candidates at the Political Forum at the Chapel on Saturday, May 17, at 10:30 a.m. The HOA, POA, and Dawson County continue to work together to ensure that Station #6 remains the Amicalola Precinct polling place.
