Al and Sherpas in Nepal
I served as a human intelligence case officer in Asia and Latin American involved in intelligence collection and special operations. My area specialization was the People's Republic of China.
My academic credentials include a bachelor's degree in political science and history, and a master's and doctor of philosophy in public administration.
Following my retirement from government, I taught graduate international politics and national security affairs. I was a consultant on terrorism, intelligence, and national security affairs to the National Strategy Information Center, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the CBS television affiliate in San Francisco.
My passions are mountain climbing, high-altitude trekking, and my wonderful wife Helen. Together, we have climbed or trekked in Alaska, Chile, China, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sikkim, and Tibet.
I am especially interested in the period of the British Raj and the exploits of British intelligence officers of that era.

I first met Helen when she was a 20-year old Army nurse in Vietnam 1966-1967. She saw me on CBS during the Gulf War (I was a "talking head" national security adviser). Helen accompanied Nancy and me on several high altitude treks to Nepal and Tibet. After Nancy's death, our friendship blossomed and we were married in 1997
